Terraces require a tile to protect the terrace from damage in a heavy rainfall event. A terrace on a slope reduces surface runoff and with the addition of no-till & cover crops, also reduces the export of nitrate into streams, out of that tile. This type of tiling does not export nitrate or dissolved phosphorus to the extent that grid-tiling does, since we know that the cover crop will take up some of the nitrate. In a poor year for covers (too dry or poor germination) that beneficial effect is reduced. Also, winter-kill covers like oats, are beneficial only in the fall until a killing frost, whereas cereal rye is beneficial with its fall and spring growth. Therein lies the strength of perennial crops like pasture, hay, or Kernza, which require lesser amounts of fertilizer and have deep roots which take up much of the nitrogen in the soil.

One of the primary benefits of tile drainage that is very important whether a farm is large or small, full-tillage or no-tillage, is that it increases the number of days when the soil is dry enough to be worked without causing compaction. Think about tilling your garden- if you do it when it is too wet, the soil will become lumpy and have poor tilth when it dries out. Tile drainage very much helps dry out the soil so a farm can get on the field sooner. This is especially important on large, spread out operations - if you are in an area 30 miles away, you want to plant all of the land when you are there, because you might not make it back for a couple of weeks once you move on. If a portion of the land is too wet, you either have to "mud it in" or not plant the field.

When it comes to water management, virtually everything we do on the landscape is designed to get water off of the field, parking lot, road, etc. faster. Drainage ditches, road ditches, diversion ditches, subsurface drains, etc. All of these practices make land more productive for our intended purposes. There are tradeoffs- higher peak flows in streams and rivers and of course conveyance of nutrients directly to water-bodies, not to mention the loss of habitat. Right now the benefits of the trade-offs are heavily weighted toward the landowner and the cost is on the common good. It's hard to see how more corn is a benefit for the common good.
