Paul Johnson introduced a similar bill many years ago, early 1990’s. It was blasted right and left. The Leopold Center subsequently set up an interdisciplinary team to look at the issue and established a site north of ames on bear Creek. It was one of the Center’s most successful team projects and led to national awards and helped NRCS write standards for riparian zones. Of course, no one remembers or cares for the past. I hope CDI will decide to support! That would be a baby step. And if the bill must circulate for another year and thus gain support, I hope the effort is not dropped.
It never seems to be mentioned that these buffers would qualify for CRP payments that most years would exceed the net profit of raising crops. Yeah, I get it though, the Farm Bureau types hate taking those government handouts (sarcasm).
Thank you for the continued unvarnished truth. Your book was my selection for this month’s book club, which was eagerly accepted. We are looking forward to the discussion and I hope there will be some political involvement as a result.

Outstanding commentary on a problem older than the Bible...
Continued gratitude for telling the TRUTH...you're one of Iowa's best educators!
